Understanding the Significance of the 'Mansions'
The 'Mansions' referred to in John 14:2 symbolize the various realms we are meant to explore on our spiritual journey as God's children. In this passage, Jesus comforts us by affirming that His Father's house is real, and that each realm offers its own reward. The term "mansions" signifies comfort, belonging, and the distinct purposes God has for His children.
Humility: The Foundational Realm
Humility is the foundation in which love is built. In Matthew 18:3 Jesus proclaims,
Verily I say unto you, except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.
Entering the house that Jesus describes requires humility. In fact, humility is essential to navigate through every part of the house, as each level demands greater humility than the previous one. Being humble involves relinquishing our desires to align with our Father's will. It is all about consistently honoring Him, even if it means we must be humbled in the process. Reflect on which aspects of your life still bring glory to yourself rather than to our Father. In what ways is God encouraging you to embrace a deeper humility?
Peace: The Realm Where We Discover Rest
The prophet Isaiah speaks about the coming of the Messiah in the Isaiah 6:9,
For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counseller, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
Genuine and enduring peace can only be obtained by embracing the government described by Isaiah. When we fully and completely entrust all our matters to God, He, in return, grants us eternal peace. Our challenge is to trust God sufficiently to understand that His will is superior to ours and find solace in that. As we grow in trusting God, we will surrender more to Him. The more we entrust to Him, the greater peace we will experience in this life. Reflect on what is preventing you from deepening your trust in God. How do your daily habits and mindset hinder you from attaining lasting peace?
Faith: The Realm Where Our Ways Please God
Faith, in its most practical form, is a state of consciousness. Having faith in an object means having an unwavering belief in its capacity to fulfill its purpose. For instance, when we sit on a chair, we demonstrate an awareness that the chair will support us. This concept can be directly related to our faith in God. Consider how aware you are of God and His ability to fulfill His promises in your life. The challenge we face in this realm is placing our faith in God, who is spirit and therefore invisible. Since it's easier to trust in what we can see, faith is activated when we extend that same trust to the unseen. When we successfully activate this level of faith, it pleases God, and in return, He will perform the extraordinary, as described in Proverbs 16:7,
When a man's ways please the Lord, he maketh even his enemies to be at peace with him.
Overcoming The World: The Realm of Divine Reconciliation
Truly overcoming the world involves making choices different from those of previous generations. We recognize our Father as a covenant-keeping God, and in Deuteronomy 30:16-18, He describes an eternal covenant with our ancestors, the children of Israel, highlighting the rewards of adhering to it and the repercussions of violating it. Soon after, the Israelites broke this covenant, leading to significant consequences for their generation and all their descendants (including us). This realm is significant because it represents God's invitation for us to enter a new covenant with Him through Jesus Christ. This covenant redeems us from the repercussions of breaking the old covenant by realigning us with God through Christ's death and resurrection. The reward for embracing and upholding this new covenant is outlined in Revelation 3:21,
To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.
Reflect on the original covenant God made with our ancestors. How can you avoid their errors and become an individual who honors the new covenant?
Grace: The Realm Where Time is Extended
Grace is an extension of time. James discusses how God determines who receives grace in James 4:6,
But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.
In essence, to gain additional time in our lives, humility is essential. What does God consider as pride? Jesus refers to this in John 9:39-41, particularly in verse 41,
Jesus said unto them, If ye were blind, ye should have no sin: but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remaineth.
What does Jesus mean when He states that our sin remains because we see? When we choose to notice the faults in others, gossip about them, and make harsh accusations, Jesus cautions that God will only perceive sin in us and withdraw grace accordingly. God 'resists' those who resist the need to forgive. This realm is essential as it serves as a reminder that we were all saved by grace, not by merit, and no one should judge others with a sense of superiority. Instead, we should all strive to support each other in reaching a higher calling. The reward of demonstrating grace and overlooking the faults of others is the prolonging of our own life. Consider how you perceive others. Do you notice their flaws first or their strengths?
Transfiguration: The Realm Where We Become Like the Rock
In Matthew 16:18 Jesus proclaims,
And I say also unto thee, that thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
Transfiguration is achieved through unity with oneself and others. When a person is transfigured, they embody the likeness of Christ by being filled with the Holy Spirit and gaining the ability to effect change in the world. We become akin to Jesus, who is The Rock, and as a result receive His Glory and access to the spiritual realm. This realm signifies the peak of the spiritual journey, representing our unity with Christ and discovering our true identity as children of God. Consider who Jesus is as The Rock. What adjustments will you need to make to reach this level in your spiritual journey?
Walking in The Spirit: The Realm of Unlimited Power
Once transfiguration is accomplished, a lifestyle of walking in the spirit emerges. Romans 8:14 encapsulates this way of life in a single statement,
For as many as are led by The Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
Walking in the Spirit means relinquishing all control to The Holy Spirit for His glory. We reach this realm after mastering earlier ones, allowing The Holy Spirit to lead us through life's path. By demonstrating our dedication to God, we are now granted the power He intends to give us. Our lives are no longer our own; we become vessels for God to use whenever He wishes for His Glory. Consider your spiritual journey up to this point. Which mansion are you aiming to master now?
